Humboldt Arts Project
Snippet from future Article on the HAP by Nicholas from HumboldtLiving.com
Dec 6th
Excerpt “Nico: Was there a large desire to purchase some of the artworks at the last event?
Vico: Yes, both artists and gallery guests wanted to buy/sell the works. After much debate on whether we would do sales through the gallery we decided to continue to support the not for profit model. We also understand both the necessity of proffesional artists to generate income as well as providing such great artwork for people who want to purchase it. We will be taking more action this next exhibition by facilitating the sales through contact lists, sign up board, contact info on title cards, and of course by encouraging artists to be there and make those connections. By staying with the not for profit model we ant to continue to encourage those artists that would just love to show their work without the pressures of pricing, dealing with commissions, or having an entire body of work. This has been a topic that we have been discussing in our open meetings and we have decided that a 15% Suggested commission for any works sold through the connection of the Humboldt Arts Project.
Nico: It seems like you’re still working out some of the details on the HAP. What are the immediate goals and future plans for the HAP?
Vico: Well, I don’t come to any of the decisions by myself. We keep the process open to everyone with our emails and public meetings. We try to have everyone come to agreements on the future decisions. Anyone who comes to our meetings can have a say in what happens. I can personally see [the HAP] being around longer with the continued support of the business community, local artists, and the community. We have been lucky to be well supported by local businesses so far. We have had donations of wine, coffee, beer, equipment, t-shirts, jewelry, catering, printing, food, financial as well as my own time and graphic design work. Some of our sponsors are Arcata Main Street, Robert Goodman Wines, Muddy Waters Coffee, Ironside Metal, Blackjack, Stebbins Properties, Catlin Blair, Christina D’alessandro, Plaza Liquor, Holly Yoshi, The Jambalaya, Visual Concepts, my business Vico Designs and other private sponsors.
Nico: Are you a non-profit with a board of members? Or, do you work with the Ink People?
Vico: We have not reached that level of organization yet. We are having meetings to work in that direction. There are some supporters and artists who are interested in this. We will probably keep it an independent non-profit endeavour moving forward. But we would love to collaborate with any organization like the Ink People, Accident Gallery and the many others in Humboldt County…”

Arts Arcata Grand Opening
The Humboldt Arts Project!
The Humboldt Arts Project is comprised of a fluid group of visual and performing artists throughout Humboldt County. The H.A.P aims to enrich the North Coast community through the promotion and exhibition of visual and performing arts.
The H.A.P. understands the important role that art plays in the building of a healthy conscious community. Our goal is to connect our vibrant local artist community with the rest of the public. As a non-profit event we want to create a dedicated art space in which all types of artists can connect with their community without out the financial stress of having to sell or purchase artwork. We hope that by removing the financial aspect it will encourage a more open dialog between artists and their community. Come and join us by being part of this experiment!

The Humboldt Arts Project! Call to All Artists!
Oct 25th
Artists of Humboldt County,
My name is Vico I am local multi media artist based out of Arcata who is working hard on a new and exciting opportunity that has just about materialized. What I am speaking of is The Humboldt Arts Project or The H.A.P.
What is The H.A.P.?
The HAP is the opening of a brand new Non-profit visual and performing Arts space in Arcata. The H.A.P’s first exhibit will take place during the next Arts Arcata! event on November 13th. The event will host a wide range of artists exhibiting their talents in everything from Photography, Painting, and Drawing, to Sculpture, Video, and Performance arts. We will be hosting Visual Arts inside the building and will be having musical performances in the alleyway behind the building. A Samba performance by local samba group ” Samba Na Chuva” will be at 7pm.
The H.A.P. is being hosted at the Feuerwerker building on 854 9th st in Downtown Arcata thanks to the generous donation of space by Stebbins Properties.
This exhibit will be a one day event. Artwork will be dropped off on Friday morning and picked up either after the exhibit closes or later in the weekend.
This will be a not for profit exhibit meaning that the art work will not be for sale. This doesn’t stop anyone from making leads to sales!
This event’s main goal is to connect us artists with our community by having an opportunity to exhibit our work to the public.
Wine will be served on the event and there will be a music performance by a Samba Na Chuva! So it will be a fun reception!
We have a lot of wall space that I am looking to fill with art and a small room in which I want to exhibit Sculpture and Ceramics.
Call for Artwork:
If you would like to be part of the show please send me images of the work you would like to exhibit (up to 3 pieces) with dimensions, media, title, and your full name.
More on The Humboldt Arts Project:
The HAP is comprised of all the artists in Humboldt County that want to participate in this experiment. The reason I call this an experiment is that there is no guarantee of it being around for a long time. The space that will be hosting the HAP’s exhibits is being donated by the landlord and its not a long term deal. But with that being said the landlord is a supporter of the Arts and is willing to donate the space for as long as he has it available.
After some hard thinking this is what I believe The Humboldt Arts Project’s mission is :
The H.A.P. understands the important role that Art plays in the building of a healthy conscious community.
The H.A.P’s goal is to enrich the community in the North Coast through the promotion and exhibition of visual and performing arts.
To use this new location in Arcata to connect our very vibrant Artists community in Humboldt County with the general public.
As a non profit event we want to create a dedicated art space in which artists of all types can connect with their community without out the financial stress of having to sell or purchase artwork. We hope that by removing the financial aspect it will encourage a more open dialog between artists and their community.
This experiment cannot succeed without the support of all of us, so I invite you all to be a part of this project.
If you are interested in volunteering your time please let me know in the email you send with your work. There are still many tasks that need to be taken care of that I would appreciate some help with.
Some of these tasks will be:
Spreading the word on the event by flyering the Area and the HSU and CR Campus’s.
Volunteering during the event as Security on the doors
Helping hang the art on the event day
Helping with cleaning up the day after
Serving wine during the event
Trash detail
Walking around the Plaza the day of the event getting the word out on the event.
Possibly sign making
And probably a few other things that I am forgetting.
I will Host a get together this Friday the 30th at my place which is where the event will be taking place so that we can all look at the space and divide the tasks I mentioned. Lets get together have some cocktails meet each other and figure out the strategy for the event. Please let me know in your email if you can make it to this Friday’s get together.
This is great opportunity and I am confident we can make this happen! Please get in contact with me as soon as you can and get the word out to other artists that might want to be involved. Feel free to forward this link to anyone who might be interested.
This has been a lot of info so Thank you for hanging in there! See you soon.
-Vico
